This is something that they should consider doing in Ireland. It would be useful for children in 6th class here to hear from first years themselves how they found the transition from primary to secondary. I think it would help address some of the worries and fears primary school children have about leaving primary school, where they're the most senior students in the school, and go into first year, which is like starting over again!! Maybe schools could look at making a mini film like this and putting it up on their website for parents and children to watch together. My son is 15 now and he found the change very difficult as did some of his male friends. I think little 'helps' such as this would go a long way towards making the transition easier. Susan Gibney.
Susan, Thanks for that comment. I found it very difficult to find anything in an Irish setting. I too would have liked to have heard some Dublin or country accents in the video. This video I feel catches the essence of what it is like for those about to start and those who have been in secondary for a few months already. I just hope other parents have a look to show them it isn't as daunting as they think. Thanks again, Patricia
Susan, Thanks for that comment. It took ages to find a suitable video so you can imagine how happy I was to find this one. Only wish it was coming from an Irish perspective. But then again children are children the world over. Patricia
