I'm involved in a youth support project and part of that work is running a transition programme in conjunction with the school completion programme. I think that it gives young people a confidence boost just before they start second level. I sometime think that it may help them more than they say to us.

  2. I really like these practical tips for parents. It probably affirms things they may be already doing and encourages them to continue being supportive.

  4. We have a mentor system in our school so incoming first years are matched with a sixth year mentor. They meet with them in the summer term before they join the school and fun activities like bowling are arranged.

  6. Penny,
We use a similar system in our school. It works really well and will be an area I will look at in my presentation on the 12th. It's great for the first years to know at least one person in the senior cycle before they join. Thanks for the comment.

  7. I really hope this site stays up and running. Our son had a really difficult time settling into secondary school and I think all parents need a forum to discuss issues that can come up in relation to their teenagers. Great work Patricia!!

  10. Hi Patricia,
I enjoyed the documentary on the childrens experience of moving from Primary to Secondary - and it would be a good talking point for 6th class to see what their fears and reservations are before they move on to secondary. What came across was that the induction and the first week in the Secondary school seemed important to the settling in process. As well being able to manage to find your classes and keep up with the extra homework - the children said they were sad to leave their old friends but met new ones when they moved on. A helpful site for young people and parents. Susan
