My name is Paula and I have 3 teenagers and a younger son. They have all had varying experiences of moving into secondary- some more positive than others. One of the biggest problems we encountered over the years was the size of the new school and getting used to moving around it. Another was all the teachers and subjects and the way they are taught. One of the key things that helped them to settle in well was finding a teacher who took an interest in them, and was there if they needed a hand. They also had a visit to the school before they started and got some idea of the layout from that. I'll put the book on my shopping list for Christmas so I hope it will have some advice on my last child who has had the greatest difficulty to date in settling into primary school. Hope I don't get a repeat in 2 years time. Great tips at end of this page. Useful blog. Thanks Patricia.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that Paula. A lot of what you have said is certainly reflected in the book mentioned here on the blog. One of the key things I found interesting about it is that the students themselves have been asked about their perspective on the move from primary to post primary, so you can be sure it's very real.
